Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races. 

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

Noon:  6 miles in North Logan at noon with Blake C. at a 7:04 pace.  We were originally going to do a 7:30ish pace, but it was such nice weather we were running a bit faster.  Afterewards we did another mile at a 7:40 as a faster cool-down pace.  Nice jog.

20 miles in the afternoon.  10 miles at tempo pace up and down Smithfield Canyon at 7:28/mile AP.  Then did a slow 10 miles with Claire.  We did the first 4 at a pretty at an ok pace--around a 7:40 AP.  Then we turned North, the wind kicked up and we battled a 35 MPH headwind. I think it was probably good to go 10 miles slower--more time on my feet.  It seems that slow long miles are harder than faster long runs.  I was more tired afterwards than if I'd ran the last 10 faster...

Got back and heard the news about Boston--what a tragedy.  I watched the finish of the winners this morning.  Heard of some friends finishing.  With the cool weather I was wishing I was there.  Hope the authorities find who is responsible fast.

Woke up not to long after midnight with stomach issues. Either stomach flu or food poisoning.  A group had lunch catered Monday, and 5-6 people who ate the catered became sick either Tuesday night or early today.  Needless to say, I spent the whole day in bed and between the bathroom.  Most of it was sleeping.  Was supposed to do at least 10 miles today...not going to happen.

10 - North Logan at lunch.  Was feeling a lot better than yesterday...  First mile felt good at normal pace, second was a bit slower, then on the third I could feel the effects of being sick yesterday, and not eating anything.  By mile 5 I was thinking about walking back and just going straight back to work... kept jogging slower and slower.  My legs actually felt ok., but my stomach was doing flip-flops.  Pretty miserable, but hey, I finished the run.  8:03/mile AP.  Still feel a little out-of-it.

10 miles in Smithfield.  Out and back from home, down past the dairy (dairy loop), up past Sky View and Back.  Good 1st half - 7:18/mile AP.

Then did another 10 up and down Smithfield Canyon with Claire, helping her get ready for a half-marathon.  Her feet weren't feeling that good, so we took it nice and easy.  8:28/mile AP.

 Overall for the 20 miles was around a 7:50 /mile AP.

10 mile out and back in North Logan.  First 5 was with Blake C. (co-worker).  Went out at a good pace 7:13/mile for the first 5 miles.  He had to cut it short, so I went (back the way we came) and finished up the 10.1 miles with a 7:12/mile AP.

 Good jog.  A little windy from the West, but overall felt good.
