1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

20.65 miles in Smithfield, up and down Smithfield Canyon and back in the morning.  Good jog.  Cooler weather.  Still sweated a ton.  Right before I placed some Poweraid (32 oz) and two 16 oz water bottles on my route.  Went back and wieghed in at 209.6.  So on the run I drank four pounds of water, and when I returned I weighed in at 201.2.  8.4 lbs lost after drinking 64 oz on the run.  Anyway, any 20 miler is a good run.  I pulled something in my side, so ran at an easy, slow pace - 7:53/mile average, with a few one mile strided.

10 miles in North Logan at noon.  The first of the run my side (top of pelvis) was killing me.  I started running with a shorter gait with a little faster steps and the side felt a little better.

Looking on the internet, it is the top of the Tensor Faciae Latae where the problem is.  It is hard  raising my Right leg out to the side without pain.  Anyway, changing my gait and running smoothly helped me through the run.

7:29/mile AP.

8 miles in North Logan at noon.  Ran the first 1.5 miles with Brent at around an 8:20 pace - he is doing well.  Then I sped up a little and ran the last 6.5 in a 7:35 pace.  Did some short strides, hurt my TFL again -- even worse.  7:43/mile overall.

Interesting Marathon.  Slowest marathon I've done int 7 marathons (which it shouldn't have been), but my legs don't feel like I took it easy.

The run started off pretty good.  Crazy downhill, and had to force myself to slow down many times.  Went through the half at 1:26:47.  Felt great.  Made it to mile 15.5 (start of the Ogden marathon) and I was still feeling good...passed a ton of half marathon walkers.  Doing the Ogden the past 5 years, I was used to this part of the course.  Kept on running, slowing down a little but not too much.

About mile 19.5 there is a small hill.  Going up it pounded my left forfoot and it started to hurt. Still was keeping up an ok pace, but slowed down considerably until mile 21.5, where you turn south off the Ogden Marathon course.  I slowed down and after about a half mile I could feel I was running on the outside of my left foot to avoid striking too hard on my forfoot.  Around here I passed Kam who was walking a little.  Then my foot started to be more painful and my right TFL started to hurt, which killed my spirits, and I slowed way down.  At mile 23 I decided to stop at the aid station and see how I really felt.  I took a drink and walked a little.  Ussually when I hit the wall I feel it is just as easy to jog or run as it is to walk--not here.  Breathing, cardio, etc was fine.  I jogged for about 25 yards but it hurt too bad, so I decided to play it safe and not turn the injury into a bigger one, so I hobbled--(walked) in the rest of the way.  At the aid station at mile 25 Kam ran past.  I jogged in the last hundred yards.

Interesting that will all the downhill, my quads don't hurt much but my calves are a little more sore than normal.

Much slower than what I trained for and expected but to end on a few postitive notes, even for a slow time and super slow last 3 miles I still took 3rd in my age 45-49 (surprising especially after walking three miles), also still another BQ marathon :-).
