1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

4 miles loop in North Logan at noon with Brent.  8:37/mile AP.  Brent is doing well and improving--a lot faster than I was when I first started running.  After we finished up I did another 6 mile loop with a 7:19/mile AP.  81 degrees--cooler than July.  Felt good.

5 miles in Logan Canyon with Claire.  It started out good, but after a mile started slowing way down.  We left not too long after we ate, and we both felt queasy so we cut it short.

North Logan at noon:  3.12 mile loop with Brent at a good easy pace.  Then did 7.02 afterwards.  Started out on the 7.02 at a good pace, but started slowing down rapidly, so overall ran at a slow pace.  Back is not doing so good.  Will have to take it easy.

5 miles in the morning in Smithfield.  No watch.  Partially up Smithfield Canyon and back home.  Nice and slow.  Forefoot a little bruised.  My back felt like it loosened up a little.  Nice and easy jog.

11 miles up and down Smithfield Canyon in the morning.  Went up pretty slow, not feeling too great.  When I hit the turn-around point, I started feeling a lot better so did three miles a little faster.  Mile 7 -  6:20, Mile 8 - 6:21, Mile 9 - 6:35.  Overall average wasn't too fast:  7:36/mile AP, but my back is feeling a lot better.

13 miles in the morning with Sky View Cross Country.

We did a trail run from Dry Canyon to FlatTop Peak.  5 miles up to the top and then 5 back down to the truck.  First 2 1/2 miles up wasn't too steep, but still made your calves burn like you were doing calf raises the hole time.  The last 2 1/2 was steep and rocky.  It turned into more of a power-walk.  Got to the top, took some good pics, and then ran back down.

The rest of the guys stopped at the truck, but I decided to run back down to Sky View to get about another 3 miles in...  Still quite downhill.  The first 1 1/2 miles I was at a 5:57 pace.  Then I breathed in a bug and it went deep into my lungs, I slowed way down and was coughing/wretching like crazy and finally got it out...finished off the three miles in a 6:24 AP/mile.  Later that evening and Sunday I was more sore than after the last several marathons I've ran.  But it was a great experience to be with Conner and the crew.

Good--not so good 20 miler.  When I got up I was wishing I'd registered for the TOU Half Marathon.  Did a bunch of stuff around the house, and then went out in the afternoon for my 20.

At the start I felt great.  Pretty hot out but felt good.  At 5 1/2 mile I grabbed a 32 oz poweraid I placed, and drank down about half of it.  I was thirsty.  I drank the rest on-and-off up to the 10 mile turn around at the campground in Smithfield Canyon.  When I got to the campground, my stomach wasn't feeling good.  There is a manual water pump you at the campground that you have to push a bar up and down to get water out of a spring.  I filled up the 32 Oz water bottle and spent a few minutes drinking it...very thirsty.  Threw the bottle away in a trash can and I took off.  After a mile my lower stomach started feeling not so good, so I slowed down a bit.  It got worse and worse until I got to the 15 mile mark at Mac Park.  I grabbed another 32 Oz Water bottle I placed at mile 15, drank it and tried to use the restroom at the park.  Then took off again.  Got down to mile 17 1/2 and my stomach wasn't feeling good at all.  Felt so bad I had to shuffle (super slow jog) the rest of the way home - walked a little too.

Both Conner, Claire, and my wife had similar issues with their workouts.  At the first they felt great, but about 3/4 into it their stomachs acted up as well.  We must have eaten something that didn't set well the night before.  Overall, I still went 20 :-).

Afterwards, went on my bike and pace Claire on her 8 mile run.

Today was busy.  Things came up early in the morning, had to work through lunch, and then had to help out the kids in the evening.  Finally got off to go running in the dark late in the evening.  Ran around Smithfield.  Nice slow easy run.
