1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

Rob,

Hi. You have got some serious cold weather going on there. Glad to see it got warmer as the week progressed. Hope all well and you are able to get some more runs in. I sometimes stop by and check out what you're doing but don't comment at times...again...sorry about that. Talk to you soon.

From Rob Mantz on Tue, Jan 15, 2013 at 05:49:34 from 65.130.231.105

Thanks. No need to apologize about not commenting :-) I peruse a lot of blogs and don't really comment a lot.

Good job on your running. Good luck on training for an running the 50 miler. I'm kind of leaning on doing a 50 miler in a few years.

It also looks like you are close to Boston. Hope to see you qualify and run Boston some time. You certainly could with your dedicated training.

Thanks. Yup, I got a little behind. Still pretty cold here in Cache Valley, Utah--hoping for it to warm up soon so I can get a little more serious runs in...

Rob,

Hi. You are getting in the miles this week - but very cold weather. Wish it were warmer for you. I was wondering about that. I know he ran two events this and last weekend. I was wondering how much of a break between events.

From Rob Mantz on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 17:20:49 from 129.123.197.35

There was a good break between events-somewhere around 4 1/2 hours.

Enough for us to go eat lunch, go do some shopping at Costco, head back, change, run for an hour and shower... Fun day.

From PRE on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 20:08:10 from 99.50.213.11

Rob,

Well that is a decent break! And I agree - fun day! Awesome that you get to spend time like that with Conner. These are important life events here - these moments! Be well. Talk to you soon.

Wow! I think that is faster than what you have been running of late. Nice miles. I know - still Easy miles, but on the harder side of Easy (at least according to my calculations where I have your marathon pace being 6:49).

From Rob Mantz on Mon, Jan 28, 2013 at 09:14:26 from 129.123.197.35

Yeah, it was a good jog. It was nice to be out of the cold and the pollution up in the canyon. Went with a friend/co-worker who really doesn't do much long distance running more than 5K's. He's pretty fast on the shorter distances.

Rob,

Hi. Nice miles. I thought I checked recently and it seemed like you had some down time. Didn't want to be a pest and ask about it. Not sure why I thought that because it looks like you got some decent miles in there last week and today! Hope all well with you and your family. Talk to you soon.

From PRE on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 19:45:32 from 99.50.213.11

Oh, By the way. I read that Conner had to have tryouts for the track team. That true or what? I mean, what is up with that??? All American and he has to have track tryouts? Guess I am not too up on the sport.

From Rob Mantz on Tue, Mar 05, 2013 at 09:09:20 from 129.123.197.35

Thanks.

Yeah, they did have track tryouts...Conner just had to go through the motions. The tryouts weren't very difficult. The head coach just wants the rest of the kids to commit to being on the track team, push themselves a little, and get a baseline on their events. Fun stuff.

Have a good day.

10.25 in Smithfield.  Interesting run-Scheduled to do 16.  At noon my wife and I went out and ate some great Italian food (salad, soup, garlic bread sticks, etc.).  Really tasted good, and I overate a little.  Waited about three hours afterwards and went out on my run.  The first mile was ok, but a little slow.  The 2nd mile my stomach started feeling really bad.  By mile 4 it had moved from my upper stomach to lower stomach and hit fast and hard.  By that time I was up a Smithfield Canyon a little way, so I was able to jump a fence and find a good bush.

Stomach still felt bad.  Then my left knee started aching right under the knee cap.  As I continued up Smithfield Canyon it got so bad I had to stop running and walk a little.  My stomach was doing flip-flops still so i turned around and jogged home.  I cut it short and went up the golf-course hill.  Right under my left knee cap, it started hurting again and I had to walk up the hill--seemed to only really be painful uphill.

At least I went for a jog today.  We'll see how it goes on Monday.

10 miles in North Logan.  Stomach was feeling good, but I went out slow to baby my knee.  The only real uphill sections of this run are miles 2 and 3.  Everything else is small rolling hills or back down.  Uphill my knee felt ok as long as I concentrated on my form, and then it was so-so for the rest of the run.  Little slower to help out the knee.  7:41/mile AP.

Noon:  6.07 miles in North Logan with John S. Nice and easy.  7:28/mile AP.  Afterwards did a slower cool down mile at 8:24.  Felt good. Knee was a little sore when I got closer to the edge of the road where it was angled more--toward the middle (more flat) it felt a lot better.  Still a little sore.

I also retired the Brooks Trance which may help the knee a little - 617 miles (good shoe).  The Brooks Ravenna's only lasted around 370 miles.

18 miles - Smithfield, Smithfield canyon.  Good jog.  I left around 8:00.  Ran down towards Hyde Park, then up past Sky View High School, then up Smithfield Canyon and back.  Today was also the Shamrock Shuffle 5K.  When I got down by the high school I was at mile 15, I noticed it was about 15 minutes before the start of the race, so I ran the Shamrock Shuffle backwards.  When I has a bit less than a mile left, the 5K started so I was able to see Conner, Claire, and everyone else pass me going the opposite way.

Finished up at the high school.  7:30 AP for the 18 miles.

Afterwards, I hung around to see Conner and Claire get their awards.  I also was able to do a slow cool-down for a couple of miles with Conner and Nathan.

Nice that the weather is starting to feel a little more like spring.

20 miles up and down Smithfield Canyon twice. First 10 I ran on my own. Good even pace at 7:32/mile AP. A little cold, but not that bad. Didn't want to push it too hard so my knee will heal up a little.

When I got back home I repeated it with Claire. Conner ran the first 3.5 miles with us. We did a nice easy pace. The winds started up and we had a strong head wind going up the canyon, and then it changed and we had another head wind going back down. The wind made it a lot colder the second time around. 8:22/mile pace on the 2nd 10. Overall 7:57/mile AP for the 20. Good easy run.

I think it was probably good to go 10 miles slower--more time on my feet.  It seems that slow long miles are harder than faster long runs.  I was more tired afterwards than if I'd ran the last 10 faster...

8 mile out and back in North Logan with Blake C.  7:08/mile AP.

About at mile 5 it started raining hard and hailing.  It was coming down so hard that two cars stopped and the drivers asked us if we wanted rides.  The rain lasted from mile 5 to mile 7  and then slowed down.  It was kind of fun.

Ogden Marathon:  Well, this race didn't really turn out how I wanted it, but hey, it was still great to run another marathon (#13).  It was pretty much wet and rainy the whole race.

Last fall after the TOU Marathon, I was pretty committed to losing some pounds, and even got down to 189 (once) before Thanksgiving. Long story short, during Thanksgiving, Christmas Hollidays, etc. I didn't push away from the table enough, so I gained it back. I went into this race at 204, which means I am still in the Clydedale division. So this should be my last Clydesdale race (pending I push away from the table enough and train well this Summer).  Commitment will be the key.

Back to the race:  Got up to the start, was able to talk to a few people I knew.  Had a few good quick visits with Steve Anderson, Walter Brown, and a bunch of others. It was wet.  I had on a garbage bag over my top, and grocery bags tied around my shoes to keep my feet dry.

I took the bags off my feet and chucked the garbage bag while I was talking to one of my friends about 40 feet back from the start. We noticed the race started, so we worked our way down to the start line, started our GPS's when we crossed and were off.  I really didn't think I was taking it out that fast at all, then looked at my watch at about .4 miles and noticed it was a 5:51 pace, so I quickly turned on the brakes and slowed down.  first mile was a 6:20.  Still felt like I wasn't going that fast, and felt good, so I said ok, I'll try a little more speed this first half--it may bite me later, but may not.

After the first mile or so, I noticed my feet were already wet and my shoes were making "sloshing" sounds with every step.  About mile 2-3 I noticed I was running about the same pace as a girl from Logan that I've seen at a few races, so I decided to pace with her for a little while.  She has gotten a lot faster.  About mile 4, a big guy passed me (Turned out to be Chad James from Roy who won the Clydesdale division last year).  I thought it was him when I saw him.  So we kept up with him and it went back and forth.  He slowed down quite a bit for water breaks, and then would pass me in between.  The girl from Logan sped up about mile 11, and so I ran back and forth with Chad until the Half.  I passed him right at the Half way point, and didn't see him again until later.  Half way was 1:27 something.  Overall I still felt great, other than a little bit of normal soreness in my legs that I always have by the half way point.

I did the hill at mile 14 ok, a little faster than the wrist band I printed with the times from my fasted Ogden Marathon in 2010.  Did mile 15 great, slowed down just a few seconds/mile on miles 17 - 19.    The rain made an ideal situation for chafing -  not to mention the right side of my shorts kept coming down a little, which made me have to pull the right side up about 2-3/mile (didn't want to shock anyone by loosing my shorts HAHA).  I only wear these shorts on races, and they have never done this in 6 races, but were so soaked and heavy the right kept riding down.

20-22 was a bit slower, and I was starting to notice some right hamstring issues.  After entering the trail, right around mile 23 there is a small steep hill (more of a big bump on the trail).  I saw it and said great, so I pushed it right up.  That's when my entire right hamstring and calf just cramped up.  So I slowed down quite a bit to work it out.  After about a mile it worked out, but I was kind of stuck on the same slow pace.  I sped up a little, but it started bugging me about mile 24.5, so I slowed way down to work it out.  At mile 26 it worked its way out a little so I speed up for about another quarter mile, then it cramped up again, so I slowed way down to work it out...just a little faster than walking pace.  about 30 meters left, a guy came up on my left, patted me on my back and said good job, keep going.  I looked and noticed it was Chad, the Clydesdale runner who I hadn't seen since the half.  When I recognized him, I notice the cramp was gone and took off at a sprint.  I heard him say whoa, and got 4 second on him.   After the finish I talked with him briefly--nice guy, we talked how it was a tough race with all the rain, etc.  Great temperatures, just wet.

Later I talked to a bunch of people, again, picked up my award/plaque and Claire's (she did the half and won the 13-18 female division).  Fun race, wish it would have been faster, but that give me motivation...

One thing about the distance.  5th time running the Ogden, every time it is exactly 26.45 miles.  And my GPS is pretty right on.  I've checked it against other professional GPS's and it correlates with them perfectly.  It has registered St. George at exactly 26.22, and seems to do well on all training runs in Canyons, etc--interesting.

Good race Rob! I agree, Ogden is almost a quarter mile long. Bugs me every year. A chunk of that is because they measure the course using tangents across the entire road and then they only let you run the right side race day.

From Dave S on Sun, May 19, 2013 at 15:12:22 from 63.248.248.225

Nice Job! I liked the sprint at the end for the win!

My Garmin has also come out exactly 26.22 when I have run St George. Boston and TOU have read about 1/4 mile long though.

Nice job. I watched you pace with Mandy for the first 7 miles before you pulled away. I was also glad you didn't loose your shorts. I think we felt the affects of the rain in the last part of the race.

AM:  9 miles up/down Smithfield Canyon with Claire.  She wasn't feeling that well so we ran nice and slow.

Noon:  4 more with our dog (chihuahua, jack russell cross).  Not to good of a run.  A little less than a mile, a yellow lab came running out (probably trying to play) and took me down.  I landed on my stomach, skinned/bruised my knee, and scrached my glasses.  Not too bad, so I got up and we kept going.  A block later we ran past a fence.  Two blue healer dogs started trying to go after us.  One reached his head through the fence and grabbed my dog and started shaking it.  I had to kick the thing in the head to make it drop our dog.  I checked out my dog...not really hurt, so we kept going really slow.

The good thing about todays running was that I finally passed 1000 miles for the year!  OK for a fat old clydesdale jogger.  I will try to get another 1000 by the end of the year.

Hi. Nice miles. Hope that guy (Brett I think) is still running. I love that story you tell under "Personal" in the left margin. Do you have any races planned for this year? Talk to you soon. Hope all okay with you and your family.

Be Well.

10 with Conner, up and down Smithfield Canyon (easy slow run for him, faster tempo run for me).  Fun run-favorite running course..

1st mile we gain a little, then lose about 150 feet.  The next four up Smithfield Canyon we gained about 630 feet.  Then back down the same way (lose 630 feet the next four, then gain 150 feet for the last mile).  7:20/mile AP.

Afterwards, ran 8 miles with Claire.  Same course but turned around a mile early for the 8.  Ran a bit slower...

Overall, averaged 7:44/mile for the entire 18.  Good for the tough course.

Got dehydrated...  When I left, I weighed 208.  After running the 10 with Conner, I drank about 16 oz.  Then on the run with Claire, we stopped at 6.5 miles at a park, and I drank another 16 oz.  Got home and weighed in at 200.  So subtracting the 2 lbs I drank, I lost 10 pounds of sweat.  Overall, good running today.  Felt great!

20 miler in Smithfield, Smithfield Canyon.  Ran 5 then caught up with the people running the Health Days Half Marathon going up and down Smithfield Canyon.  I was going pretty slow but passing a ton of people on the way up.  At the turn around for the Half, I just kept going for a ways.  Then turned around.  Past a lot of the same people again--freaked them out a little (that was fun).  Then left the course coming out of the canyon and finished my 20.  Last 4 were very slow--first 20 in a while.  Fun easy run.

13 miles in the morning with Sky View Cross Country.

We did a trail run from Dry Canyon to FlatTop Peak.  5 miles up to the top and then 5 back down to the truck.  First 2 1/2 miles up wasn't too steep, but still made your calves burn like you were doing calf raises the hole time.  The last 2 1/2 was steep and rocky.  It turned into more of a power-walk.  Got to the top, took some good pics, and then ran back down.

The rest of the guys stopped at the truck, but I decided to run back down to Sky View to get about another 3 miles in...  Still quite downhill.  The first 1 1/2 miles I was at a 5:57 pace.  Then I breathed in a bug and it went deep into my lungs, I slowed way down and was coughing/wretching like crazy and finally got it out...finished off the three miles in a 6:24 AP/mile.  Later that evening and Sunday I was more sore than after the last several marathons I've ran.  But it was a great experience to be with Conner and the crew.

Good--not so good 20 miler.  When I got up I was wishing I'd registered for the TOU Half Marathon.  Did a bunch of stuff around the house, and then went out in the afternoon for my 20.

At the start I felt great.  Pretty hot out but felt good.  At 5 1/2 mile I grabbed a 32 oz poweraid I placed, and drank down about half of it.  I was thirsty.  I drank the rest on-and-off up to the 10 mile turn around at the campground in Smithfield Canyon.  When I got to the campground, my stomach wasn't feeling good.  There is a manual water pump you at the campground that you have to push a bar up and down to get water out of a spring.  I filled up the 32 Oz water bottle and spent a few minutes drinking it...very thirsty.  Threw the bottle away in a trash can and I took off.  After a mile my lower stomach started feeling not so good, so I slowed down a bit.  It got worse and worse until I got to the 15 mile mark at Mac Park.  I grabbed another 32 Oz Water bottle I placed at mile 15, drank it and tried to use the restroom at the park.  Then took off again.  Got down to mile 17 1/2 and my stomach wasn't feeling good at all.  Felt so bad I had to shuffle (super slow jog) the rest of the way home - walked a little too.

Both Conner, Claire, and my wife had similar issues with their workouts.  At the first they felt great, but about 3/4 into it their stomachs acted up as well.  We must have eaten something that didn't set well the night before.  Overall, I still went 20 :-).

Afterwards, went on my bike and pace Claire on her 8 mile run.

The run started off pretty good.  Crazy downhill, and had to force myself to slow down many times.  Went through the half at 1:26:47.  Felt great.  Made it to mile 15.5 (start of the Ogden marathon) and I was still feeling good...passed a ton of half marathon walkers.  Doing the Ogden the past 5 years, I was used to this part of the course.  Kept on running, slowing down a little but not too much.

About mile 19.5 there is a small hill.  Going up it pounded my left forfoot and it started to hurt. Still was keeping up an ok pace, but slowed down considerably until mile 21.5, where you turn south off the Ogden Marathon course.  I slowed down and after about a half mile I could feel I was running on the outside of my left foot to avoid striking too hard on my forfoot.  Around here I passed Kam who was walking a little.  Then my foot started to be more painful and my right TFL started to hurt, which killed my spirits, and I slowed way down.  At mile 23 I decided to stop at the aid station and see how I really felt.  I took a drink and walked a little.  Ussually when I hit the wall I feel it is just as easy to jog or run as it is to walk--not here.  Breathing, cardio, etc was fine.  I jogged for about 25 yards but it hurt too bad, so I decided to play it safe and not turn the injury into a bigger one, so I hobbled--(walked) in the rest of the way.  At the aid station at mile 25 Kam ran past.  I jogged in the last hundred yards.

Interesting that will all the downhill, my quads don't hurt much but my calves are a little more sore than normal.

Much slower than what I trained for and expected but to end on a few postitive notes, even for a slow time and super slow last 3 miles I still took 3rd in my age 45-49 (surprising especially after walking three miles), also still another BQ marathon :-).

Good job on Saturday. The course chewed me up and spit me out. It's interesting what rears up after mile 17...

My legs feel like they've been through a meat grinder. I'm glad you are faring a bit better.

Thanks--after reading your race report you feel about the same as I do...

I still can't put any real weight on my left forefoot--it is hammered, but other than that, legs are doing ok.

When I saw you pass me at the aid station at mile 25 it looked like you were cruising compared to how slow I was going. But hey, still a lot of opportunities for us to run more :-).

6.3 mile loop in North Logan at noon.  I took the entire week off last week to let things heal up.  The first mile today started off great.  Left forefoot started to hurt a bit so I continued on at a slower pace.  Nice cool day for a run.

Another 6.3 loop in North Logan at Noon.  Forefoot still feels like I have a huge rock in my shoe when I'm landing, but it isn't hurting as bad. :-) Nice easy 7.58/mile AP.  Wore a heart rate monitor -- average in the 150's.  I like to keep it in the 160's, so I could tell it was easy.
