Long-Term Running Goals:

1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

Had fun today watching Garrett compete in the rail jam at Beaver Mountain.  Between the competition I got about 8 easy ski runs in.  Saw Steve there, who mentined he was going to go do a treadmill run at the Sports Academy.

When we got home, after eating, running errands, etc., didn't feel like running outside in the dark so I went to the Sports Academy.  Ran next to Steve, who kept me going...  Nice slow long run--longest I've ever ran on a treadmill.

After flying to Orlando yesterday with the family, Conner and I woke up and ran a little over 5 miles around the hotel.  It was fun running--warm and nice.

Then we took a shuttle to the port and boarded the Disney Dream cruise ship.  5 nights cruising in the Bahamas.

Woke up on the cruise ship, got Conner up, and we ran on the running track on the Disney Dream.  Big ship--2.5 laps equaled 1 Mile.  The boat rocking a little made it a little slower run for me.  Conner wasn't really affected.

For fun I used my GPS.  It logged somewhere around 15 miles (The ship was moving).  Actual laps we only did 5.25.

Went to Castaway Key (Disney's Private Island).  They had a 5K fun run.  It was nice.

Conner easily one the race.  I was right behind another runner. They gave us Disney water bottles for competing.  Later they left certificates of completion in our cabins.  Nice fun run--water stations were great.

Afterwards, we enjoyed the beach with the family.

Last day of the Disney cruise.  We stopped again at Castaway Key.  They had another 5K race in the morning.  I didn't really push it that hard at all, but took 2nd place (after Conner of course).   About 50 people from the ship ran it this time. I ran it a little faster than on Saturday.

There were certificates in our cabins at the end of the day.  Afterwards, we went snorkeling and enjoyed the beach with the family.

In the late afternoon I did another 8 miles on the ship.  Nice and slow.

Woke up and rolled Conner's newspapers for him since he had a track meet and was tired.  Afterwards, drove up Smithfield Canyon to place some water bottles.

Ran from Smithfield, down to Hyde Park, up past Sky View High School, up Smithfield Canyon to the campgrounds and back down.  Then ran on the road between Smithfield and Hyde Park and back to Sky View. Good run.  Didn't really push it and felt good afterwards.  7:44/mile AP.

Made to Sky View in time to see Conner run the 3200 and break the Sky View record (held for 29 years).

Really an incredible run for Conner today. 9:29 at altitude at his age is no joke. He's already a superstar, I'm excited to continue to follow his career. I love his attitude and the way he races aggressively. You have a lot to be proud of!

Also, great job on the Boston! Running in that heat is tough. Congrats! I enjoyed reading your race report.

Tried to get up in the morning, but my back was very sore so I slept in until 9:00 and loaded up on IBUProfen.  Got up, did some chores to try to loosen my back up, which included pushing a lawn mower around for a while--big mistake.  I had the kids finish mowing.  My  back was and is sore.

In the afternoon, I got ready for the run.  When I started it really hurt.  I thought I may only make it about a half mile, and then walk home.  I started out slow, about 8:45 pace.  At  about a half mile, my back started loosening up, but still was sore and hurt, but felt ok to run.  I slowly sped up my pace to 7:45 / mile, but didn't dare go any faster.  I ran from Smithfield down to the road in-between Smithfield and Hyde Park, then turned and went up Smithfield Canyon.  I got to the campground at mile 10, stopped and drank a water bottle I placed, and ran back on the same route. I drank three water bottles I had placed.

While coming back, I passed a few hundred runners starting up Smithfield Canyon from MAC Park doing a 5K.  Surprized me--I didn't know they were having one.

I completed the 20, but this was the most painful run I've done.  I averaged about 7:55 / mile, and was happy about it because I don't think I did any more damage to the back.

Three weeks until a marathon.  I don't think I will do a full three week taper.  I will probably try a two week taper and see how it goes.  I'll take the next few days really easy and see how it goes.

Was glad to hear Conner had a great 1600 and 3200 today at the Davis Invitational.

I'm trying to figure out the significance to you blog picture. It's obvious the CITGO sign is in the picture for a reason...?

Nice Running Accomplishments BTW!

Thanks.

Good question about the sign. The CITGO sign is a "Major" landmark on the Boston marathon. It is at mile 25. The great thing about it is you can see it for quite some distance and it helps motivate you when running the Boston. The sign is at the top of a small hill where you run over an overpass. Once you pass the sign, you know you only have a little over a mile to go...

Google 'CITGO sign boston marathon' and you'll find a lot of info (it is in almost every course decription for the Boston)...also click on images.

Good job on your running! Looks like you could be doing the Boston yourself soon.

This was the 2nd annual Huff to Bluff Marathon, from Blanding to Bluff, Utah.  Great marathon. It was good to be back in my hometown where I grew up.

Everyone from the race director (Ryan Heck) to the volunteers did an outstanding job.  The marathon is a small one, (only 105 registered runners), but a huge amount of effort has been put into it.  It is a USATF certified course and a Boston qualifier, had great aid stations, etc.

I picked up my packet the night before.  All runners (not just elites) could submit their own fluids/Gu, etc., to be given them at the aid stations at mile 9 and 17.  I put in a Gatorade and a water bottle.

Saturday morning my Dad drove me down to the start, and we visited with a few folks before the run.

The first half is a gentle downhill course, dropping around 800 feet.  There are a few rollers, but nothing really big.  I didn’t really push it too hard, mostly ran alone, and reached the first half right around 1:30.

The second half also has a net loss of about 800 feet, but is a little interesting,  Just after mile 14, you drop off of White Mesa, and run downhill for about a mile, loosing around 300 feet. This was a fun relaxing, faster mile.  Then after mile 15,  there are a series of 4 rollers, climbing about 200 feet until mile 18.25.   I slowed down a bit up the hills.  At mile 19.25 another series of rollers start, and you gain around 80 feet until mile 22, and then you drop down into Bluff.

About mile 22 I looked around and couldn't see anyone behind me.  Usually about this time I key off of people to pace with so I can push it a little.  No one was around so I decided to just run in at an easy pace, have fun, and enjoy the sights dropping into the canyon, the sandstone, including the "twins" rock formation, etc.

To me, overall the course felt similar to the Top of Utah or Ogden marathons in elevation drop and difficulty.  It was as well organized as any marathon I've run.  I didn't push it as hard as I could have, but it was nice afterwards to be able to get out and enjoy the country...

Rob:

You have very decent times for the ruptured disk problem. Interestingly enough, there is one thing we have in common. I have a problem in L4/L5 as well - spina bifida occulta - a big chunk of L4 on the right side is missing, and a little bit of L5 is missing as well. It is not as bad as a ruptured disk, but it certainly affects running economy and speed.

I am wondering if you experience the following problems:

- running slower than the competition of equal ability on the uphill or into a headwind

- oversized quads

- second half of the marathon still ends up being somewhat slower than the first even when you have a good race, do not feel like you are overexerting in the first half, and feel strong in the second

- after a marathon the primary area of complaint is stiffness in the lower back

From Rob Mantz on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 09:57:46 from 129.123.197.35

Thanks Sasha.

I do have most of the problems you mentioned.

- Uphill I do run quite a bit slower than the competition. In several marathons I pass a pack of runners going downhill, and yell to them "You'll pass me on the uphill". Then I'll pass them on the downhill again later on.

-Headwinds really get to me. I was up the canyon early in the morning of the Utah Valley, felt the headwind and was glad I wasn't running it. Looked like you guys had it pretty bad when I was watching everyone come in with slower than normal times.

- I don't really have over-sized quads. I'm still little over-sized all over. Currently at 202 (still in the Clydesdale/Wt. classification). I figure I need to loose more weight and get down to at least 180 in order to break a 3 hour marathon. I've started cutting weight a little more so hopefully I'll be able to this fall.

- I have the same issue with the second half of the marathon being somewhat slower even though no pushing it on the first half.

- I always have a stiff lower back - especially after a run. Depending on how I run will determine if I will be in pain at the end. One of the things that really helps my back is forefoot running (almost a little too much). If I heal strike at all I will be hurting.

One interesting thing--after going to a chiropractor and having a full body x-ray, I found my left leg is 2 centimeters shorter than my right leg. That is why I keep hurting it-- especially if I pick up anything and twist. I try to do a bunch of back stretches every day to keep it as loose as possible.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 12:42:36 from 67.222.225.187

Rob:

Thanks for the info. This goes along with my theory that a properly functional lower back is critical for good performance against resistance (headwind, uphill), and for maintaining the speed in the second half of the marathon.

My explanation of the above symptoms: when you run against resistance, the contribution of elastic energy of the spine becomes more important because you cannot use the quads anymore to compensate for the lack of it as they are working more to overcome the resistance. On the downhill, they do not have to work as hard, and can be recruited to pick up the spinal slack, which allows you to be competitive against the guys that drop you when running against resistance.

When you run the marathon, the spine gets gradually compressed as the race progresses. This is the case for everybody, but if a part of your lower spine is unhealthy in some way, the healthy part is overworked, and as a result the whole thing compresses faster, and you get to the point where the loss of spine elasticity begins to affect your running speed.

So with that in mind, dropping the extra weight is a particularly good idea as every extra pound has an pile-on domino effect on your spine and onward to the muscles. Additionally, it would be a good idea to strengthen the lower back muscles and the gluts so they could provide partial compensation for the failure of the spine in the area of shock absorption.

Interesting stuff...thanks. I sometimes joke that the reason I run is so I can enjoy my wife's great cooking. I am planning on shedding some more pounds. We'll see how it affects the running...so far I've dropped around 50 lbs.

Another interesting thing is that I don't really have the bone structure of most distance runners--my frame is a bit larger, 8.5 inch wrists (no fat there). In college, 25 years ago, I wrestled at 190 lbs.

20 slow easy miles around Smithfield and up and down Smithfield Canyon.

Got up this morning a little before 5:00, woke Conner and Claire up to take them to the Smithfield Not Yo' Mama's Half Marathon.  They picked up their packets and I had to get home, do Conner's paper route and return before they finished.  Fun seeing Conner and Claire come in.  Conner placed second overall and Claire got first in her age group.

Was going to run earlier (just after the race) but waited around for the awards.  Then went home and a few pressing things came up.  Then I went out and placed 3 16 oz water bottles at mile 6, 10.5, and 16.  I finally made it out around noon.  It wasn't really too hot, but it was very humid.

The interesting part is how much weight I lost in sweat.  I was 201.1 when I left.  I drank all three 16 oz water bottles.  Mile 16 was right next to Sky View High School, so after drinking the third water bottle I quickly went into the Recreation Center, filled the water bottle up again, drank it, and filled it up again.  I drank that one though the last 4 miles. So in total I drank 5 watter bottles (5 pounds of water).

When I got home I was still thirsty, but quickly went in to shower and weighed in at 194.6.  So this means I lost 11.5 pounds, drank 5 pounds, and still ended up 6.5 pounds less than when I started.

Total elevation gain was 1550 feet, loss of 1276 feet.  The lowest elevation was at mile 3, with a steady gain of 1027 feet at my turn around at the Smithfield Canyon campground (mile 10.4).  With the dairy loop and hill by Sky View, gained another 500+ feet.

Anyway it was a good slow run in the heat and humidity. Haven't done a long run in a while, so I didn't push it and felt good.

AM - 10 nice easy miles up and down Smithfield Canyon. I've been running in the heat lately, and I think it is taking a toll...getting a little too dehydrated on my runs, even with drinking, and getting a little burned out...or burn't up :-). Starting to run in the morning this week. Left about 5:45 AM. It was nice and cool, but warm enough to work up a good sweat. I haven't ran this early in the up Smithfield Canyon in a while. Saw several "new" faces and others I knew. Good easy run. 7:55/mile AP.

PM - 2 miles in North Logan.  Did some cross training, planks, etc., and then went out and did a nice easy 2 mile run to streatch my legs out a little more.

Went camping with the family to the City of Rocks in Idaho.  Saturday morning got up and did 10.6 miles with Conner.  From where we were camping we ran down and lost about 1300 feet.  Then back up again.  At our turn around, Conner went a little farther and later caught up to me.

At mile 9 my Garmin's battery gave out.  When we got back to our camp, Claire and I did 10 slower miles.

Today I felt pretty good.  It was a fun TOU half marathon.  Got up at 4:45 am, dressed, and got Claire up.  After a quick bite, left the house about 5:10.  Got to the start and visited with a few folks--Daryl, Steve, Scott and a few others.  I have taken it pretty easy for the last 2 days, and was pretty apprehensive at the start. My garmin always reads a little long for this race - 13.2 --probably due to the reflection/refraction of the satellite signal off the walls in Hyrum canyon.

Started out well, maybe a little too fast at the start:

Overall I think I could have pushed it a little more, but it was great getting a PR.  I beat my previous PR by 3 minutes 4 seconds. (I don't do many half's).

Afterwards, I got some drinks, rested for a little bit, talking with Steve and a few others from the blog.  Then jogged up to meet Claire and ran in with her.  She got a PR and won her age division.  I only made it up about a half mile and ran with her to the finish.  Afterwards went on another 3.3 miles and got back before the awards were given out.

When I got home, I decided to do a few more miles before showering, and ended running about 4.  Overall got in 21.4 miles.

Thanks Andrea and Allie--It was a fun race.

Conner was wishing he could have ran it, but is just starting his XC season--good picture of him and Jake on Jake's blog. It was great he came to watch Jake, Steve, the other guys on the blog, myself and his sister.

Rob,

Hi. I learned about you son Conner through a blog by Jake. So I looked him up and learned about you.

You guys are great runners.

I read some of your information to the left. Excellent how you picked up running again in 2005.

AND, while you may not be focusing on speed all the time, YOU ARE FAST! Either that or I am really slow.

Continue to enjoy the running.

Thanks.

Looked at your blog. Keep up the great work! You've done a lot of great races.

15 miles in Smithfield, partially up Smithfield Canyon and back. Got up about 5:30, helped the kids with the paper route, and then went out for my run. Right after I left it started pouring. I was totally soaked by the time I hit mile 2--shoes were sloshing. The rain and everything slowed me down a bit, so I had a nice easy run. Probably a really good thing since I am starting to taper a little for the Top of Utah in two weeks. Averaged Somewhere around an 8 min. mile. My legs feeling a bit beat up...nice to start the tapering... :-).

After the run, I went to the Utah State Cross Country invitational with Conner. Never seen a college XC race before...fun to watch it.

Two easy miles to loosen up the legs.  Wednesday I caught a bug, and Thursday I didn't even go into work.  Either a brief bit of something I ate or a couple days of stomach flu. Today I am feeling a little better--still had to sprint back on my two mile run to get to the bathroom.

On the website for the TOU Marathon, they said there would be porta-potties every mile.  Maybe I'll get a PR tomorrow doing 26 sprints to each honeypot. :-)

26.220.000.000.000.0026.22

Pre-race:  Had a great time talking to people at the expo during packet pick-up.  Got up early, had a small breakfast, and then drove to Merlin Olsen Park to load the bus.  I rode the bus up with my niece, and had the usual good brief visits with some people on the blog and others I like to chat with before a race...  I was a little worried about my stomach, being sick on Wednesday, Thursday, and a little bit yesterday, but overall I felt pretty good.

Race:  After the gun went off, I actually felt pretty good.  I started out a little fast, and looked down at my Garmin and forced myself to slow down a little.  Miles 1-7 went really well.  A little before mile 8 (which is about the start of the TOU Half Marathon), my stomach started rumbling.  It got me a little worried, so I slowed down a little.  It went away after about a half mile so I went back up to the pace I was running previously and felt pretty great.  I hit the half-way point right around 1:29.  I thought "Great, I may be able to PR".  Nice tail wind at the mouth of the canyon, and continued to go well.

Then about mile 15 or my stomach started acting up a little and I started feeling out of energy.  This forced me to slow down.  I thought I'll run a slower pace, let my stomach recover, and when the 3:05 pacer catches me I'll run with them.

The pacer caught me right before mile18.  I ran with them until we turned off the highway and partially up the first set of hills.  I dropped back a little about mile 19 not feeling too well. By this time I let the stomach issues, lack of energy, and not hanging with the 3:05 pacer kill me mentally.

Usually on a marathon I can run through the wall pretty well, but the wall was amplified more than ever.  In the past 11 marathons I've never felt as trashed or in as much pain as I did about mile 25.  The 3:15 pacer passed me, and  I continued chugging along slowly.  I came in at 3:16:37.

I've done 6 marathons faster than this so I was a bit disappointed with my time.  However, I can't complain--I never stopped running and still took 1st in the Clydesdale (over 200 pounds).

Post Race:  It took about an hour and a half for my stomach to settle down--I didn't feel good at all, but tried to take in as much fluids as I could.  Eating made it worse.  Later, after things settled down, I had some good visits with my niece, friends, and some co-workers that ran it.   Also, had a good visit with Jake at the awards presentation.

This will be my last race as a clydesdale.  In order to improve my time, be less prone to injury, and feel better while running I need to lose at least 25 more pounds.   26 years ago I wrestled in college at 177 lbs .  That is now my target weight.  So the experiment now begins to see how losing weight will affect my running.  We'll see how it goes :-).

I can tell a big difference with plus or minus 10 pounds. 20 to 25 pounds would be huge.

Went to Sport Academy  and did a little cross training, then jumped on a treadmill.  At first I was a bit sore.  After warming up, I was surprised that the soreness went away.  Did a mile in 7:30, then another one in 6:30, and then a cool down for .25.  Legs felt ok, but decided not to push anything.  Cooled down and went outside and sat in the Hot tub outside.  Felt good.

Time to start working on the weight loss thing.  Tomorrow I am going to start using Lance Armstrong's site www.livestong.com to track weight loss, calorie intake, calorie burning, etc.  The site has a pretty good calorie counter site--used to be myplate.  We'll see how it goes...25 lbs to go!

Rob,

Hi. Hope you and your family are doing well and hoping also that your work schedule is getting a little lighter. I refreshed my memory and checked out your accomplishments and goals again. Love that you write you're not that fast...to me it is incredibly fast! Don't take this the wrong way - you are so close to a 2:59 Marathon time! Looks like your best marathon time is 3:05. Not sure if 2:59 is a goal for you but would be AWESOME!!! Myself (don't laugh now): Marathon PR 3:54 and goal is 3:30.

Hey Rob,

Hope you got it in gear! Nice 8 miler Tuesday. I have been getting five milers done on Tuesday through Thursday during lunch time! And been super consistent with those weekday runs as a result (versus doing them pre or post work).

Thanks--needed the encouragement. Looks like you've been doing great yourself. Keep it up. I registered for the Ogden Marathon, so now I'll start getting a little more serious about training. Seems if I'm not registered for a race, I slack off :-) Have a good day.

6 mile out and back in North Logan at noon.   Great lunch break.  Awesome weather for this time of year, about 45 degrees.

I'm also starting a new training routine, which entails running 6 days a week and taking Sunday off.  I don't know if I've ever run 6 days a week in my training (maybe once or twice).  In the past I felt I've always needed one or two days off/cross training to let my legs recover and avoid injury.

On Sasha's site http://www.asksasha.com/Running/Top-10-Training-Mistakes.html, he mentions the following:

"Doing anaerobic speed work without proper aerobic base conditioning. If you are running less than 8 miles a day and/or less than 6 days a week, your extra energy should go into increasing the daily mileage and the number of training days per week rather than speed work. If you feel you have to reduce your aerobic mileage on the speed day or the day after, this also shows that anaerobic speed work is not something you need at the time."

So here goes another experiment:  The next two weeks I'll run ~6 miles each day of the week, and take Sunday off.  I may bump Saturday's run up a little, depending how I feel.  I'll slowly build up from there...  One thing I'll need to do is make sure I alternate speeds a little, and run slower at least two days of the week--hopefully to avoid shin splints, etc.  Most of the time if I don't feel I ran around a 7:30 pace or faster, I have felt I haven't really had a good work-out.  We will see how it goes...

I ran with my Garmin and my iPhone using Endomondo.  Interesting comparisons.  Garmin said 7:19/mile AP.  Endomondo was 7:15/mile AP.  I hit stop on my garmin 4 seconds before hitting stop on Endomondo:

Are you heading down to San Diego this weekend?

I'd love to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado where the runners are staying but I'm just a humble schoolteacher!

It's an incredible experience being a Foot Locker finalist. The kid's end up feeling like Olympians.

From Rob Mantz on Mon, Dec 03, 2012 at 17:26:00 from 129.123.197.35

Yes I am planning on going down. I'm in your boat about staying at the Hotel Del Coronado. I was thinking about just going down in my truck (that has a shell), put a mattress in the back and "Beach-Bum" it.

South of the Hotel Del, (about 4 miles) there is a campground called Silver Strand State Beach. It is probably around $30/night--may just do that. I'll have to call them and get info and decide what to do afterward.

Should be a lot of fun. Let me know what your plans are. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

8 mile out and back in North Logan at noon.  Lot of snow, slush, and it was wet.  Starting to get slippery.

Had a great jog...somewhere about 7:35/min average pace.  During the run I was finally able to think about my quick trip to San Diego to watch Conner and let everything sink in.

Had an awesome weekend - Flew down later on Friday and went to the Footlocker Nationals on Saturday morning to watch Conner.  I was able to find Rob Murphy and had fun visiting with him and getting a lot of pointers.  After the race I stuck around a bit, then went over to Coronado, met Conner, walked around on the beach, took pictures, etc.   Also great to talk with Kramer and Ben, take a few pics of them, and had a great walk/jog on the beach.  I was also able to visit with some relatives for a little while that I hadn't seen in around six years or so.

Later we went to the Awards Banquet at the Hotel Del.  Glad Conner was able to get an extra ticket as the food was ok, but not quite worth how much they were asking if you had to pay for it.  It was awseome to see Meb give them their All-American medals.

Then flew back on Sunday.

It has been fun to see Conner make goals, work towards them, and then reach them.

Plenty of time to reflect and make some new goals for myself, both in running and not running--funny how this sport seems to help improve your life in areas other than running.

lol-yup, it was a great weekend. Conner inspires us all (especially us old fogies). He works hard in everything--from running, to school, to his guitar playing without me ever having to tell him to do anything.

Thanks for being a mentor to the kids on the blog. Your encouragement means a lot to them. You'd be an awesome coach :-)

Rob,

Hi. I have been following your blog - also Conner's. Just have not commented on yours very much...sorry about that. More comments on Conner's blog by me. But I had to research what was going on with him because I was uneducated around FootLocker Championships, the Nationals, etc. I learned quite a bit and enough to know that what he did was amazing!! 4th at the Championships and 12th at the Nationals! BUT...they get medals for All-American...I did not know that. From what you and he wrote, it sounds like the both of you had a great time! I don't know how he got started running, but I wonder if you had something to do with that??? Anyway, as always, hope you and your family are doing well.

From Rob Mantz on Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 09:38:25 from 129.123.245.35

Yeah, footlocker was fun. We had a good time.

I may have helped Conner out a little. He mainly started running because he wanted to be like his brother, who is a few years older than him who was doing a little running.

Back in 2006, when I started running, I asked my oldest son if he wanted to do a half marathon, nice and slow. We ran it together when he was 11, and we had fun. Conner wanted to do a half marathon like his brother, so he ran a little and did his first half marathon when he was 12. He kept it up from there.

I saw your plan to do an ultra...should be fun. Good luck.
