PRs:

        Half-Marathon:
                2012 TOU - 1:25:48

Long-Term Running Goals:

1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

First run on new shoes.  My old shoes (Brooks Adrenaline 11) only had 345 miles.  However, the right side of my right shoe was wearing away quite quickly.  I mostly forefoot run, and I think the pain in my right foot was from the wearing of the shoes.

My left knee (under the top of the kneecap) has been hurting because I've been running a little different to compensate for my right foot hurting.  Also, I've been running on the side of roads with a chamfer/slope to the outside of the road.

The run went well, with not too much foot pain, 7:37/mile.  After the run, the pain became quite bad.  I'll take a few days off and see how it goes.

Rob, Good to see another Cache valley runner on the blog. I'm guessing you must be Conner's dad? He's sure been tearing it up the past couple of years. Great talent. Nice pace on your run.

20 miles from Smithfield to Hyde Park, back up to Smithfield and Smifield Canyon.

Really did well at the first. I went out too fast.  Miles 1-4 lost 300 feet in elevation to Hyde Park, averaging aroud 6:50/mile.  Then went north up Smithfield Canyon, gaining 800+ feet for the next six miles.  Turned around and went back.  At 17 miles the Garmin was at 7:25/mile. The last 3 slowed way down - (gaining the 300 ft in elevation I lost at the first of the run), and ended up with a 7:39/mile average.

We'll see how Boston goes. Got my bib # yesterday (3089). I may just run it as a fun run...we'll see how my left knee and the outside of my right foot holds out.

Great run! The Boston is really one of a kind. The spectators were awesome.

The weather was good (50's), but have been training in 30's and 40's. I felt the tail wind some times, but a lot of the time the air seamed stagnant, which added to the heat. At every aid station past mile seven, I was grabbing two cups of water and dumping it on my head, and grabbing another to drink. By the end my feet were sloshing in my shoes like I'd been running in the rain. :-).

I started out a little too fast, and felt it at the end. the last mile was a little over 9 min/mile. Overall average was 7:28/mile. Ended up at 3:15:36.

Overall, I felt it was a pretty good effort considering the injuries I've had over the last year (back, calf, knee, foot, and ribs). Around the second week in August I couldn't run at all, so I felt good about the run.

Maybe it is time to get a little more serious, lose some weight, eat a little better, add some more miles to my runs, and work on speed. I may soon be out of the Clydesdale division in the marathons here in Utah.

Interesting fact: My Garmin 305 and several other's read 26.45 miles for the course--probably because of all the weaving in and around people, etc.

Nice job! Especially considering your injury issues. I had the same issues with my Garmin. I came out 26.42. I'm sure the weaving in and out of runners and the fact that you can't hardley cross the road to take the tangents in that kind of crowd. It's probably amazing that it only added 1/4 mile.

Five miles at 7:14/mile. I was originally going to do these five as a slow post marathon jog to loosen up and get the blood flowing. After starting to run, I felt really good, so I increase my pace, and then some more.

This was a weird run. I did it faster than I thought I could and I felt I wasn't pushing it that hard--especially after three days following the Boston Marathon. My legs were sore the 19th (day after), but the 20th (yesterday) they really came back quickly. Today they felt like a Monday after a Saturday 20 miler.

After this run I am questioning a little whether I pushed it as hard as I could have at Boston. But then again, the last mile of the marathon I was very burnt-up, focusing on not walking. Interesting sport this long distance running is...maybe I should keep it up ;-)

Yup! Ogden will be my last race in the Clydesdale division. I'm hovering just a little above 200. After the Ogden race I plan to start cutting weight and train hard all summer.

By the St. George Marathon I'll hopefully be much lower than 200. Maybe it will be time to try to break a 3 hour marathon...

Earlier AM - had a fun time watching the Smithfield Health Days 5 and 10K.  Jogged the mile run with my 9 year old to keep him going.   They turned everyone doing the mile run around a little earlier, so it wasn't a mile, but it was fun.   After the 5K and 10K had a good chat w/ Steve and Scott, and met Dave...  Good times.

At 11:00, did an 8.15 mile loop around from Smithfield to Hyde Park - 7:33 AP while Conner was getting ready for his soccer game.  I was planning to run quite a bit slower.  At the start of each mile I looked down and my watch and slowed down, but gradually spead up a little toward the end of each mile.  I think I was thinking about the 5K and 10K I watched this morning.

Interesting marathon.  The first half was really nice and cool.  According to my Garmin I hit the half just under 1:30. That was about the pace I wanted, so I was happy with the first half.  I knew I probably couldn't get a 1:30 in the second half but wanted to run the first half under 1:30 (did it in 1:29:30).

The second half went well, slowed down a bunch, but still kept a fairly good pace.   It got pretty hot.  Drank a lot, and threw a lot of water on my head.  Ran a little slower toward the end.  I think the heat got me a little mentally, so I slowed down around the last mile and a half.  I don't think it was as hot as my mind was telling me it was.

Anyway, I'm happy with the run.  44th Overall, 1st in the Clydesdale.  (The first post I saw was 32nd overall, I guess they fixed some more chip times).  This will be my last Clydesdale run.  I'm going to be working on cutting weight pretty hard over the next two months.  I want to loose about 25 pounds and make it down to around 177.  I think if I do this, I'll do a lot better on the second half and may be able to keep it down below 1:30.

After the run I had a great time talking with Steve, Rob Murphy, and others.  Both Steve and Rob had great times.

I talked to my Mom on the way home.  She said that a news reporter said the race would be around .2 miles longer due to the detour at the end of the trail around mile 25.  (The detour was to go off the trail because of the high river and potential flooding.)  I think the start line was moved a little closer to compensate, but everyone's Garmin read between 26.45 and 26.5.  I ran the inside of every corner to try to get the benefit on the turns and mine was 25.45.  Of course, Garmins can be off...  Still it was a neat run.

The chip timing was a little weird.  They had a lot of problems.  My time wasn't posted for over 3 hours.  Chip time was one second longer than gun time, and I was back bout 30 feet at the start.  The readers were facing forward, so everyone's chip time was definately off. So much for new technology (and I'm and IT geek).

I'm looking forward to St. George this fall.

Great race! That was cool to have you tell me before the race that you wanted to run a 3:08 and then post a few seconds under it. I agree, a strange marathon.

From Dave S on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 17:34:22 from 4.253.100.227

Nice job! Congrats on the Clydesdale win. With that kind of weight loss you should have a good shot at a sub 3 in St George. That's what I'm shooting for too [if I can stay healthy].

That timing did seem messed up. I'm sure the sensors read you before you get to them and there was no mark on the road for where the actual start and finish lines were. I'm sure they read some people farther out than others too.

From Rob Mantz on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 09:35:09 from 76.27.105.225

Thanks Steve and Dave. Those chip times are really messed up. I looked on line and now they have the gun time 2 minutes 59 seconds longer than my chip time. When they showed me the printout before the awards, the chip time was 1 second slower than gun time. I know it took me about 10 seconds or so to cross the start. They also must have found some more chip times...

Not coplaining, but this marathon seemed a bit unorganzed. I'll be surprised if I see it in Runners World this year as one of the best rated.

Me and the family left to go camping in Idaho after Conner's running of the 15K Fredom Run.  We went up north of Preston for a few nights and camped at Emmigration Camp Ground.  We didn't have any Cell or internet access which was a nice change for a while.

On the way back we received a few texts about the write-up on Conner's 15K in the Herald Journal.  Nice article.

Took yesterday off due to a few pains in my foot.  This evening I did 8 miles.  When I started it was 84 degrees.  Ran up and down Smithfield Canyon again.  Lots of bugs in the air.  I was cruisin' until mile 6.5 when I breathed in a huge bug--right down into my right lung.  I don't know what it was but I was coughing and weasing like crazy until I got it up.  Felt like a large fly or beatle.  After that the last 1.5 were slow--still gaging the rest of the way.  7:50/mile average pace.

This was the first Smithfield "Not Yo' Mamma's Half" Marathon. It was a nice run. The course was a bit short (under 13), but considering the hills-up around Smithfield golf course and then down to Mac Park and up Smithfield Canyon-I'll take it as a half. For a first half marathon that Smithfield Recreation organized, it was well done. Bryce King (the race director) did well.

It was really nice to have a local half marathon that isn’t an aided "downhill" course. It was challenging and enjoyable. From the data on my garmin from connect.garmin.com, there was an overall elevation gain of  around 852 and loss of 848 feet  from Garmin Training Center (on my computer) it showed around 1543 gain/loss, adding up and down every little hill.

I didn't push it as hard as I could have, but am satisfied. It was an awesome experience running it with Conner (14) and Claire (Clarissa) who is 12.  Conner took 2nd overall and did a good job.  Paul Peterson did a great job coming in 1st overall.  It was good to see them running down the Canyon as I was going up :-).

After finishing, I talked with Conner and the family, got a drink, and ate a piece of watermellon. Then I jogged back up the course a few miles and met Claire and then ran back in together. She did an awesome job of finishing in 2:02:34. She placed 1st in her age group for females 18 and under. She was very satisfied and didn't seem very beat up at the end. Maybe another runner in the family. She was excited and wants to do another one.

We waited until the awards were given out and then I ran 3.1 miles up to Hillside in Smithfield, around a few blocks and then back home. Total miles was around 20.

Got dressed for a run in the morning, got my Garmin 305 out and it was totally dead.  It says it is charging when I put it in the cradle, I can download from it, but once I pull it off the cradle it dies.  Looks like the battery is gone.  It worked well for about 3 1/2 years so I can't complain.

I was a little de-motivated so I decided to do some cross training today at the Sports Academy at noon and then run in the evening.  We had some network issues in the evening at work so I had to stay way late and couldn't run.  My legs also need a little break.

When I just got home I ordered a new Garmin.  Found a new Garmin 305 on line (boxed) for only $87  (one time deal).  Looking forward to getting it.  I was debating on the newer forerunner model, but I think I like the 305 best (for the price).  It is a little big but that doesn't bother me too much...

One of my friends got a new road bike.  He introduced me to biking by letting me use his old one.  16.35 miles around Smithfield and up and down Smithfield Canyon.  First time on a road bike since the 1980's.

It was a good ride.  Good workout for the quads!

20 miles from Smithfield down towards Hyde Park, and then up Smithfield Canyon through the campground and back the same way.  Interesting run...  Did the first 6 in just under a 7 minute mile.  Just before mile 8 pains started shooting through my left achilles and up my calf.  I slowed way down.

I had placed water at mile five, but thought I'd be fine until the campground where they have a well with a hand pump.  Over the past few years I have loved running up there, taking a breather at the well while I pump it and drink the water out of it.  It is always great tasting, cold water.  Unfortunately, when I got there they have a sign that says "Do not drink".  IT was 77 degrees, gone 10 miles, and still didn't have any water.  So I turned around and ran down to the water I placed at mile file.  Made it and stopped at mile 15 and drank the entire quart water bottle.  Then slowly jogged the remaining 5.  Before I ran I weighed in at 204.2.  When I got home, I was at 194.2 (lost 10 pounds, even with drinking the 32 oz water bottle).  A bit dehydrated.

Overall it was a good first of four 20 milers before the St. George.  It was slow but I felt I got a good workout.  Only 8:14/mile average pace.

Before the race, I had a good time talking to Steve Anderson, Paul Peterson, and a bunch of others.

I was a bit worried about my calf.   I have a pulled Soleus muscle, down close to the achilles.  Before the race, I taped it up and and was still optomistic.  I was hoping things would go well--maybe even look for a PR.

At the start of the race, i felt really good.

Mile 1 - 6:14. - Felt great - running a little flat footed not to push off my toes for my calf.

Mile 2 - 6:28 - Still felt good.  Slowed down because I felt I started a little too fast.  Thought, "Wow, I feel great.  This will be an easy PR"

Mile 3 - 6:43 - My calf started feeling a little tight.

Mile 4 - 6:58 - Calf felt a little sore.

Mile 5 - 6:46 - Still a little sore.

Mile 6 - 6:49 - More sore, but still moving at an o.k. pace.

Mile 7 - 6:47 - Started feeling like there was a knot im my calf, but decided to keep an ok pace.

Mile 8 - 7:00 - Started to feel a little more pressure in my calf.  It wasn't moving that great. Started to slow down.

Mile 9 - 7:02 - Started to feel some pain.

Mile 10 - 7:18 - Started to be painful.  Really had to run flat footed and keep from pushing off on my left foot.  This brought my stride down to really short steps.

Mile 11 - 7:40 - Calf started really hurting.  Slowed way down.

Mile 12 - 8:00 - Calf was really not doing well - lots of pain.  I may have been foolish to keep going.  Started telling people to run faster as they passed me, and "beat the guys ahead of me".  Cardio felt good, heart rate was only about 115-120 - I didn't feel like I was pushing it physically at all.  The small hill put a little more pressure on the calf.

Mile 13 - 7:35 - Ran a little faster though the pain, but not motivated at all.

Mile 13.18 - 7:46 pace.

Afterwards I was pretty bummed out about the run.  I ran the Smithfield "Not yo mamma's half at a faster average pace per mile on my Garmin (even considering it was short).  I even ran the first half of my last 5 marathons at a faster pace.

After thinking about it, considering the cirumstances I now feel o.k. about it.  I wanted a PR, but it was still good to be able to jog it (even through the pain).  There was a lot of great PR's and a lot of people did an awesome job.

Tried to do a slow couple of blocks to see how my legs feel.  Shouldn't have - calf is too painful to run.  Current strategy - take a full week off - try to get some stationary biking and swimming at the Sports Academy.

I'll see how things feel next Monday.  If my calf feels o.k., I'll start out slow, try to get at least 50 miles, and then do the same the next week.  Afterwards I'll do a two week taper.

Hopefully not do anything too foolish to realy screw the calf up...

Sorry to hear about the calf injury. I seem to get injured quite often during the last 6 weeks of marathon training. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hope you'll be able to recover quickly and not loose too much before St George.

In the afternoon I did 20 real slow miles in Smithfield and up and down Smithfield Canyon.  Since it is only 2 weeks out from the St. George, I didn't want to push it at all.  I did want to do one long(er) run and then do a two week taper.  After mile 10 things started hurting a bit.  I lost quite a bit of motivation and slowed down.  I don't know what to expect from the St. George, but hopefully I can get a good two week taper and repair a bit...

I keep hoping to read that those injuries are clearing up for you but it sounds like they are being pretty stubborn. I've been there too going into both of my previous St George marathons with injuries and not knowing if I could even finish. Hopefully an easy taper week will help them clear up some. Good luck with it.

Great race-10th marathon.  I learned more from this race than any other.

Friday we drove down to St. George and went straight to the expo.  I origionally signed up for the race in the Clydesdale division (over 200 lbs), but over the past several months I'd lost a little more weight, getting down to about 190 four weeks before the race.

I planned to be bumped out of the Clydesdale division to my age group by not making the 200 lbs when weighing in while picking up my packet.  Because of the injuries I've had and not being able to train as hard, I've gained the weight back. Before picking up my packet, I gulped a few water bottles thinking I may make 200 lbs.  When picking up my packet I weighed in at 207.  They didn't make us take off our shoes this year.  (Wow).

After going to the condo, we "carbed-up" on spaghetti, and I continued to drink water--probably too much, and woke up through the night because of it :-).

Saturday morning, I weighted in on a scale at the condo without shoes and was 199.9.  Afterwards, drank a bunch and ate a small breakfast and left for the busses.

Enjoyed the usual stuff talking to some friends before the race.  It was nice being in the "Elite" area before the race (never done that before).

When the race started, I went out pretty fast. I felt good.  My calf was tight, but not painful so I continued on.  I'm a lot faster down hill than up hill (hills slow me down more than most runners) and hit 7.25 miles (before the Veyo hill) averaging 6:30.  Felt good.  Slowed down a bunch up the Veyo hill, and then though the hills up to mile 12.  At mile 12 I started to feel a little more tightness and a little pain in my calf so I slowed down a little more.  I may have taken the hills a little fast for my calf.  At mile 13 Dave S. passed me and I visited with him for a little bit which was good.  I ran behind him for a little while and hit the 13.1 mile mark at about 1:30, at a 6:52/mile pace.  He ran a great race, finishing at 2:58.

I decided to not push it too hard down the hill after mile 14 to save my calf for later, but still kept up a pretty good pace.

Somewhere around mile 17.5 to mile 18, Ralee Eck passed me at a great pace.  She ran a good race, breaking three hours at 2:59.

About at mile 17.5 my calf started cramping up.  I noticed my stride had changed quite a bit, was running a little flat footed, and felt a little soreness in my knee and hip because of it.

Decision time!  I could either push it, and try to break the three hour mark, maybe re-injuring my calf, knee or hip, or just slow down and ease through the last 8+ miles at a nice slow pace.  I decided to take it easy.  A few other things also convinced me--I hadn't put in the miles I normally do because I kept taking a days off to let my calf heal.  I had skipped several short runs, a few 20 mile runs, and took the entire week off three weeks before the race--and I was feeling it a little.  It was also a little hot and had a bit of a head wind which added to me making the decision.

I went in at a very slow pace the last 8 miles and came in at 3:13:48.  In retrospect, I'm really glad I did!  My left calf, knee, and hip were sore after the race, but I could still walk.

After the race I had a good time talking to the Eck's, Dave, and others.  Iced the calf, and relaxed.  I was surprised to learn I placed 3rd in the Clydesdale.  I didn't think I'd placed at all.

This will be my last Clydesdale race (of course I've said that before).

Now time for a good 2-4 weeks off to finally let the calf heal.

Nice job! congrats on the 3rd place. That was smart to back off when things got bad. That's still a great time especially under the circumstances running with an injury on limited training. Nice visiting with you and your family before and after the race.

Turned 44 today...did a slow 4.4 miles.  Good run but my left knee (MCL) and hamstring really was hurting.  When I stopped my knee was struggling for a bit.  I'll probably take a few more weeks off and start running again the first of November.  In the mean time I plan on doing some lifting to strengthen the legs.

Ran a 6:50 mile on a treadmill as a warm up before lifting.  Knee and hamstring doing a little better, but will need to take it easy.  Afterwards did a leg lifting routine:  Leg press, leg curls, leg extensions, bent knee calf raises, straight leg calf raises, etc.
