Long-Term Running Goals:

1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

15 miles in Smithfield, partially up Smithfield Canyon and back. Got up about 5:30, helped the kids with the paper route, and then went out for my run. Right after I left it started pouring. I was totally soaked by the time I hit mile 2--shoes were sloshing. The rain and everything slowed me down a bit, so I had a nice easy run. Probably a really good thing since I am starting to taper a little for the Top of Utah in two weeks. Averaged Somewhere around an 8 min. mile. My legs feeling a bit beat up...nice to start the tapering... :-).

After the run, I went to the Utah State Cross Country invitational with Conner. Never seen a college XC race before...fun to watch it.

8 miles up and down Smithfield Canyon on a nice Labor day morning. Joanna rode beside me on her mt. bike. Felt good. I envy you guys who are able to train with others. 7:27/ mile AP.

Now time to get laboring on Labor Day, cleaning and doing yard work. :-)

3 miles in North Logan at noon.  Nice and cool, overcast, and even had a few rain drops. 7:27/mile.

Saturday evening I kind of "tweeked" my back a little.  A bit painful last night and this morning.  Still felt good running, but a few hours afterwards starting getting pretty painful and stiff--had to start downing IBUProfen to ward off the inflamation. We'll see how it goes...

5 in North Logan during lunch.  Started out a little slow because of the sore back.  Things loosened up a bit after about a half mile and I gradually sped up a little.  Pretty flat run.  7:24/mile AP.  Later in the afternoon my lower back got pretty sore.  I'll take the rest of the week off to let it heal and hopefully it will feel better by the marathon.

Two easy miles to loosen up the legs.  Wednesday I caught a bug, and Thursday I didn't even go into work.  Either a brief bit of something I ate or a couple days of stomach flu. Today I am feeling a little better--still had to sprint back on my two mile run to get to the bathroom.

On the website for the TOU Marathon, they said there would be porta-potties every mile.  Maybe I'll get a PR tomorrow doing 26 sprints to each honeypot. :-)

Race: Top Of Utah Marathon (26.22 Miles) 03:16:37, Place in age division: 1

Pre-race:  Had a great time talking to people at the expo during packet pick-up.  Got up early, had a small breakfast, and then drove to Merlin Olsen Park to load the bus.  I rode the bus up with my niece, and had the usual good brief visits with some people on the blog and others I like to chat with before a race...  I was a little worried about my stomach, being sick on Wednesday, Thursday, and a little bit yesterday, but overall I felt pretty good.

Race:  After the gun went off, I actually felt pretty good.  I started out a little fast, and looked down at my Garmin and forced myself to slow down a little.  Miles 1-7 went really well.  A little before mile 8 (which is about the start of the TOU Half Marathon), my stomach started rumbling.  It got me a little worried, so I slowed down a little.  It went away after about a half mile so I went back up to the pace I was running previously and felt pretty great.  I hit the half-way point right around 1:29.  I thought "Great, I may be able to PR".  Nice tail wind at the mouth of the canyon, and continued to go well.

Then about mile 15 or my stomach started acting up a little and I started feeling out of energy.  This forced me to slow down.  I thought I'll run a slower pace, let my stomach recover, and when the 3:05 pacer catches me I'll run with them.

The pacer caught me right before mile18.  I ran with them until we turned off the highway and partially up the first set of hills.  I dropped back a little about mile 19 not feeling too well. By this time I let the stomach issues, lack of energy, and not hanging with the 3:05 pacer kill me mentally.

Usually on a marathon I can run through the wall pretty well, but the wall was amplified more than ever.  In the past 11 marathons I've never felt as trashed or in as much pain as I did about mile 25.  The 3:15 pacer passed me, and  I continued chugging along slowly.  I came in at 3:16:37.

I've done 6 marathons faster than this so I was a bit disappointed with my time.  However, I can't complain--I never stopped running and still took 1st in the Clydesdale (over 200 pounds).

Post Race:  It took about an hour and a half for my stomach to settle down--I didn't feel good at all, but tried to take in as much fluids as I could.  Eating made it worse.  Later, after things settled down, I had some good visits with my niece, friends, and some co-workers that ran it.   Also, had a good visit with Jake at the awards presentation.

This will be my last race as a clydesdale.  In order to improve my time, be less prone to injury, and feel better while running I need to lose at least 25 more pounds.   26 years ago I wrestled in college at 177 lbs .  That is now my target weight.  So the experiment now begins to see how losing weight will affect my running.  We'll see how it goes :-).

Went to Sport Academy  and did a little cross training, then jumped on a treadmill.  At first I was a bit sore.  After warming up, I was surprised that the soreness went away.  Did a mile in 7:30, then another one in 6:30, and then a cool down for .25.  Legs felt ok, but decided not to push anything.  Cooled down and went outside and sat in the Hot tub outside.  Felt good.

Time to start working on the weight loss thing.  Tomorrow I am going to start using Lance Armstrong's site www.livestong.com to track weight loss, calorie intake, calorie burning, etc.  The site has a pretty good calorie counter site--used to be myplate.  We'll see how it goes...25 lbs to go!
