I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005. I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running. He said "You'll never run again.". What a challenge! So...I started running.
Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.
I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all. I'm not fast. I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

10 miles after a week and a half off. Started out pretty good. Calf started to be a little tight after a while so I slowed down. Don't want to re-injure it. 8:30 average pace/mile.
We'll see how it goes. If things seem o.k., I'll do a 50 mile week this week and next, then a two week taper for St. George.

| 10 miles in the morning. From Smithfield to North Logan. Went a little faster to see how the calf felt. 7:44/mile average pace. Ran a little flat footed again. My knee is starting to ache slightly from it. Tomorrow I'll run another 10 a little slower to work on my form. |

10 miles - same course. Started out faster. First 5 were about a 7:10 min/mile average. Started having lower stomach problems during the 2nd half. I'm also running too flat-footed to compensate for my left calf. This is putting stress on my left knee and hip, which is starting to be pretty sore.
Overall averaged 7:58/mile. |

| 13.12 up and down Smithfield Canyon. My calf is feeling a little better but sore. Today my left knee and left hip was really bothering me because of the way I've been running flat-footed and compensating for my calf. Very slow day. I wanted to do a 20, but hurt enought that I stopped at 13. Upper 8 minute mile average pace. |

In the morning I went down and watched the runners come in at the Top of Utah marathon. It was great to see Paul Peterson and a bunch of others come in.
In the afternoon I did 20 real slow miles in Smithfield and up and down Smithfield Canyon. Since it is only 2 weeks out from the St. George, I didn't want to push it at all. I did want to do one long(er) run and then do a two week taper. After mile 10 things started hurting a bit. I lost quite a bit of motivation and slowed down. I don't know what to expect from the St. George, but hopefully I can get a good two week taper and repair a bit... |

8 miles in Smithfield. My knee was bothering me so I decided to run a 1 mile loop 8 times in my neighborhood and see how it felt. Did this so if I had to hobble home, I wouldn't be more than a half mile away. Did 8 laps. Calf and knee were very sore. I worked on my form and things seemed to be o.k. Very evenly paced 7:34/mile average. We'll see how things go in a week at St. George.
