Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

5 miles in the morning in Smithfield.  No watch.  Partially up Smithfield Canyon and back home.  Nice and slow.  Forefoot a little bruised.  My back felt like it loosened up a little.  Nice and easy jog.

11 miles up and down Smithfield Canyon in the morning.  Went up pretty slow, not feeling too great.  When I hit the turn-around point, I started feeling a lot better so did three miles a little faster.  Mile 7 -  6:20, Mile 8 - 6:21, Mile 9 - 6:35.  Overall average wasn't too fast:  7:36/mile AP, but my back is feeling a lot better.

13 miles in the morning with Sky View Cross Country.

We did a trail run from Dry Canyon to FlatTop Peak.  5 miles up to the top and then 5 back down to the truck.  First 2 1/2 miles up wasn't too steep, but still made your calves burn like you were doing calf raises the hole time.  The last 2 1/2 was steep and rocky.  It turned into more of a power-walk.  Got to the top, took some good pics, and then ran back down.

The rest of the guys stopped at the truck, but I decided to run back down to Sky View to get about another 3 miles in...  Still quite downhill.  The first 1 1/2 miles I was at a 5:57 pace.  Then I breathed in a bug and it went deep into my lungs, I slowed way down and was coughing/wretching like crazy and finally got it out...finished off the three miles in a 6:24 AP/mile.  Later that evening and Sunday I was more sore than after the last several marathons I've ran.  But it was a great experience to be with Conner and the crew.
