Long-Term Running Goals:

1.  Enjoy running 'til I drop dead - and put that off as long as possible.
2.  Don't get burn out :-)

Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

10 slow miles around Smithfield right after eating a big dinner -- oops.  Nice and slow for the stomach.  Probably a good idea to keep it slow.  7:57/mile AP

15 miles in the afternoon in Smithfield.  7:36 average pace.

It was 69 degrees--I'm not use to it this hot, but it was nice.  I was 201 lbs when I left, I drank 2 x 20 oz water bottles that I placed along the route, and weighed in at 192.5 when I got back home.  Pretty dehydrated...

Overall it was a nice run for being two weeks out from the Ogden Marathon.

Raining pretty hard so I chickened out and went to the Sports Academy at noon and ran 8 miles on a treadmill.  2.0 incline at 7:15 / mile.

I also though it would be better to run indoors to keep runing at a little higher temperature.  The run felt great.

Cross Trained at the Sports Academy in Logan.  I was a little bummed yesterday when I checked the St. George Marathon page and couldn't find my name so I thought I didn't get in.  This afternoon I received an e-mail that I drew out in the lottery and am in!

Earlier AM - had a fun time watching the Smithfield Health Days 5 and 10K.  Jogged the mile run with my 9 year old to keep him going.   They turned everyone doing the mile run around a little earlier, so it wasn't a mile, but it was fun.   After the 5K and 10K had a good chat w/ Steve and Scott, and met Dave...  Good times.

At 11:00, did an 8.15 mile loop around from Smithfield to Hyde Park - 7:33 AP while Conner was getting ready for his soccer game.  I was planning to run quite a bit slower.  At the start of each mile I looked down and my watch and slowed down, but gradually spead up a little toward the end of each mile.  I think I was thinking about the 5K and 10K I watched this morning.

Interesting marathon.  The first half was really nice and cool.  According to my Garmin I hit the half just under 1:30. That was about the pace I wanted, so I was happy with the first half.  I knew I probably couldn't get a 1:30 in the second half but wanted to run the first half under 1:30 (did it in 1:29:30).

The second half went well, slowed down a bunch, but still kept a fairly good pace.   It got pretty hot.  Drank a lot, and threw a lot of water on my head.  Ran a little slower toward the end.  I think the heat got me a little mentally, so I slowed down around the last mile and a half.  I don't think it was as hot as my mind was telling me it was.

Anyway, I'm happy with the run.  44th Overall, 1st in the Clydesdale.  (The first post I saw was 32nd overall, I guess they fixed some more chip times).  This will be my last Clydesdale run.  I'm going to be working on cutting weight pretty hard over the next two months.  I want to loose about 25 pounds and make it down to around 177.  I think if I do this, I'll do a lot better on the second half and may be able to keep it down below 1:30.

After the run I had a great time talking with Steve, Rob Murphy, and others.  Both Steve and Rob had great times.

I talked to my Mom on the way home.  She said that a news reporter said the race would be around .2 miles longer due to the detour at the end of the trail around mile 25.  (The detour was to go off the trail because of the high river and potential flooding.)  I think the start line was moved a little closer to compensate, but everyone's Garmin read between 26.45 and 26.5.  I ran the inside of every corner to try to get the benefit on the turns and mine was 25.45.  Of course, Garmins can be off...  Still it was a neat run.

The chip timing was a little weird.  They had a lot of problems.  My time wasn't posted for over 3 hours.  Chip time was one second longer than gun time, and I was back bout 30 feet at the start.  The readers were facing forward, so everyone's chip time was definately off. So much for new technology (and I'm and IT geek).

I'm looking forward to St. George this fall.

6 miles - Out and back up Smithfield Canyon.  First longer run after the Ogden Marathon.  Nice and easy.  8:02 / mile AP.

Going to start watching my calorie intake tomorrow.  Gained a few pounds this week doing nothing after Ogden.  Time to start loosing some weight. :-)
