Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

One of my friends got a new road bike.  He introduced me to biking by letting me use his old one.  16.35 miles around Smithfield and up and down Smithfield Canyon.  First time on a road bike since the 1980's.

It was a good ride.  Good workout for the quads!

20 miles from Smithfield down towards Hyde Park, and then up Smithfield Canyon through the campground and back the same way.  Interesting run...  Did the first 6 in just under a 7 minute mile.  Just before mile 8 pains started shooting through my left achilles and up my calf.  I slowed way down.

I had placed water at mile five, but thought I'd be fine until the campground where they have a well with a hand pump.  Over the past few years I have loved running up there, taking a breather at the well while I pump it and drink the water out of it.  It is always great tasting, cold water.  Unfortunately, when I got there they have a sign that says "Do not drink".  IT was 77 degrees, gone 10 miles, and still didn't have any water.  So I turned around and ran down to the water I placed at mile file.  Made it and stopped at mile 15 and drank the entire quart water bottle.  Then slowly jogged the remaining 5.  Before I ran I weighed in at 204.2.  When I got home, I was at 194.2 (lost 10 pounds, even with drinking the 32 oz water bottle).  A bit dehydrated.

Overall it was a good first of four 20 milers before the St. George.  It was slow but I felt I got a good workout.  Only 8:14/mile average pace.
