Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

Today I felt pretty good.  It was a fun TOU half marathon.  Got up at 4:45 am, dressed, and got Claire up.  After a quick bite, left the house about 5:10.  Got to the start and visited with a few folks--Daryl, Steve, Scott and a few others.  I have taken it pretty easy for the last 2 days, and was pretty apprehensive at the start. My garmin always reads a little long for this race - 13.2 --probably due to the reflection/refraction of the satellite signal off the walls in Hyrum canyon.

Started out well, maybe a little too fast at the start:

1 - 6:18
2 - 6:28
3 - 6:36
4 - 6:27
5 - 6:19
6 - 6:22
7 - 6:23
8 - 6:24
9 - 6:31
10 - 6:27
11 - 6:37 - Paced with another runner to this point.
12 - 7:08 - the only real uphill part. Slowed down quite a bit.
13 - 6:40
.2 - 1.07

Overall I think I could have pushed it a little more, but it was great getting a PR.  I beat my previous PR by 3 minutes 4 seconds. (I don't do many half's).

Afterwards, I got some drinks, rested for a little bit, talking with Steve and a few others from the blog.  Then jogged up to meet Claire and ran in with her.  She got a PR and won her age division.  I only made it up about a half mile and ran with her to the finish.  Afterwards went on another 3.3 miles and got back before the awards were given out.

When I got home, I decided to do a few more miles before showering, and ended running about 4.  Overall got in 21.4 miles.

Thanks Andrea and Allie--It was a fun race.

Conner was wishing he could have ran it, but is just starting his XC season--good picture of him and Jake on Jake's blog. It was great he came to watch Jake, Steve, the other guys on the blog, myself and his sister.
