Personal:

I herniated/ruptured a disk (L4/L5) in my back in December, 2005.  I told my orthopedic surgeon I wanted to start running.  He said "You'll never run again.".  What a challenge!  So...I started running.

Since then I've lost about 50 pounds, ran 13 marathons and a number of other races.

I am still a clydesdale runner (over 200 lbs), have a large frame, big bones, and not built like a runner at all.  I'm not fast.  I mostly run to have some time to myself and keep in shape.

This was the first Smithfield "Not Yo' Mamma's Half" Marathon. It was a nice run. The course was a bit short (under 13), but considering the hills-up around Smithfield golf course and then down to Mac Park and up Smithfield Canyon-I'll take it as a half. For a first half marathon that Smithfield Recreation organized, it was well done. Bryce King (the race director) did well.

It was really nice to have a local half marathon that isn’t an aided "downhill" course. It was challenging and enjoyable. From the data on my garmin from connect.garmin.com, there was an overall elevation gain of  around 852 and loss of 848 feet  from Garmin Training Center (on my computer) it showed around 1543 gain/loss, adding up and down every little hill.

I didn't push it as hard as I could have, but am satisfied. It was an awesome experience running it with Conner (14) and Claire (Clarissa) who is 12.  Conner took 2nd overall and did a good job.  Paul Peterson did a great job coming in 1st overall.  It was good to see them running down the Canyon as I was going up :-).

After finishing, I talked with Conner and the family, got a drink, and ate a piece of watermellon. Then I jogged back up the course a few miles and met Claire and then ran back in together. She did an awesome job of finishing in 2:02:34. She placed 1st in her age group for females 18 and under. She was very satisfied and didn't seem very beat up at the end. Maybe another runner in the family. She was excited and wants to do another one.

We waited until the awards were given out and then I ran 3.1 miles up to Hillside in Smithfield, around a few blocks and then back home. Total miles was around 20.

I'm always impressed by that 20 number. Great miles, especially those at race pace.
